Being a finalist also makes ContemPLAY eligible to recieve a People's Choice Award from Architizer if it receives enough support. ]]> Project Unicorn http://www.farmmresearch.com/news Wed, 13 Feb 2013 12:56:39 -0500 Cailen has been resuscitating the triceratops modeling cues particularly with regards to the relationship to the horn/absence of horn question. Basically, it was a theoretical question relative to the inflection point that occurs when what in a positive sense transitions from a singly-horned beast to an x-horned beast. The question was what happens as one transitions through the inversion at number of horns is equal to zero to negative horns or openings. In a sense, it goes back to the question of reading the skull, which Andrew originated with respect to Murakami's Hard Boiled Wonderland.

The b-Shack is a part of the FARMMhouse series of projects that offer the opportunity for students to learn and explore advanced scripting, digital fabrication and mass customization techniques at an architectural scale through applied research. Every two years, graduate students in architecture and related creative fields are invited to apply to participate in the yearlong FARMMhouse project. ]]> Makerbot Madness http://www.farmmresearch.com/news Sun, 12 Aug 2012 12:00:00 -0400 FARMM CTO, Jason Crow has been pushing the Makerbot Replicator to the limits. He's learned that you can reliably print planes one sixty-fourth of an inch thick and vertical walls only one thirty-second of inch thick. He has also discovered that some rather nice patterns cna be generated by judicious use of patching nonplanar curves in juxtaposition with flat surfaces generated form planar curves. Most recently he's been printing a modular component-based lampshade. Talk to Jason for more tips and tricks with the Replicator and to find out how you can use it.

]]> Jason Crow has a Shapeoko http://www.shapeoko.com Wed, 01 Aug 2012 12:00:00 -0400 FARMM CTO, Jason Crow is an early adopter and supporter of the Shapeoko open-source effort to construct desktop CNC mills. He is building his own customized Shapeoko 3-axis desktop CNC mill in the FARMM lab. So far Jason has a completed controller. Next up, he will be building the gantry and bed frame. He hopes to have the small mill operational by the middle of the Fall semester.

The MakerBot Replicator is a 3D printer, with single or dual extrusion (2-color printing) with a substantial printing footprint. It is being used to fabricate models for the MMOT grant. Migrating Landscapes is the official Canadian submission for the 2012 Venice Biennale. Created by Winnipeg-based 5468796 Architecture and Jae-Sung Chon, this submission asked participants from across Canada to submit their narrative perspectives about notions concerning “migration” along with physical models that will be displayed at regional competitions. Winners from each region will comprise the final submission in Venice in August of 2012.
